Fraud Warning - ATM Skimming June 2011
ATMs in Northern Ireland have recently been targeted in attacks of Cloning or Skimming (the process of capturing card and PIN information via illegal attachments at ATMs). Counterfeit cards are then produced and monies stolen from bank accounts. Locations identified so far include Bangor, Newtownards, Lisburn, Lurgan, Enniskillen, Castlewellan and Larne.
Protect your PIN
It is vitally important to protect your PIN. When inputting your PIN, always use your free hand to shield the PIN pad. This will prevent hidden cameras from capturing your information.
Golden Rules to reduce ATM Crime
- Use Bank of Ireland ATMs as they are fitted with ‘anti-skimming’ devices
- Check that other people in the queue are at a reasonable distance
- Use ATMs which are in clear view and well lit
- If the ATM looks as if it has been tampered with e.g. a different frontage, a sticky residue or extra signage, use a different ATM and notify the Bank or Police of your concerns
- Regularly check your bank statements and notify your branch if there are any unauthorised transactions.
