Plans have been announced for a major expansion of Portaferry Post Office under a £240,000 refurbishment funded by Bank of Ireland.
The work will see the floor space more than double, the addition of new products and services and the creation of two new jobs.
The refurbishment plan has been developed by store owner Maeve Curran who said today that customers would see major improvements including new services such as a free ATM facility, foreign exchange and travellers’ cheques, a new range of gifts and cards, new grocery and dairy lines and services for business users such as office stationery, photocopying, laminating and printing.
Maeve Curran stated: “I approached Bank of Ireland as a new customer and they were extremely helpful with financing the plan under their Essentials for Business package. The whole process of raising the funding has been very smooth which has enabled me to concentrate my energies on planning the actual work.”
Declan Kerr, Bank of Ireland’s Commercial Manager in Downpatrick, said: “Post Offices are at the heart of the community and we were impressed by Maeve’s plans to develop fresh business opportunities by expanding and upgrading the Portaferry Post Office. Our Essentials for Business package of loans and specialist business advisory services is designed to support small businesses such as Maeve’s and, despite the economic downturn, it has helped 1300 start-ups and businesses in the past year.”
Maeve Curran added: “The refurbishment will make the Post Office much brighter and welcoming for customers. We are increasing the floor space from 50 to 120 sq. metres, providing better disabled access and making it easier for mums with prams or buggies.
“As a result of the expansion, we will increase staff levels from seven to nine. We’ll be closing for a few days at the end of March and then re-opening with a completely new look.”
