Recently Bank of Ireland organised a Rugby themed evening at Queens Film Theatre to promote the sport in Northern Ireland in conjunction with Ulster Rugby.  220 rugby enthusiasts filled Queens Film Theatre to its full capacity, to watch the acclaimed Clint Eastwood directed “Invictus” in a special Bank of Ireland screening.

Players from the Ulster Rugby team were also in attendance as part of a meet and greet session with attendees.

Invictus tells an inspiring tale of overcoming prejudice and is also a fascinating study of political leadership.  Director Clint Eastwood tells the true story of Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) who joined forces with Captain of South Africa rugby team, Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon), to help unite their country.

A special competition was organised at the event with rugby and film themed prizes up for grabs.  The prizes and winners are:

·       An opportunity for two people to watch a pre-season training session at Newforge – Cathy Needham

·       An annual  gold membership for Queens Film Theatre – Lauren Moore

·       A signed Ulster Rugby Shirt – Kelvyn Williams

·       Two Tickets for Ulster v Connacht in May 2010 – David Cairns

Winner Cathy Needham commented when receiving the prize:

“The Invictus evening organised by Bank of Ireland was fantastic. It was brilliant to meet some of the Ulster rugby players, TJ Anderson, Andy Kyricaou and Bryann Young. I was so excited to win the opportunity to watch an Ulster Rugby pre-season training session at Newforge.  I am a fan of Ulster Rugby and have fanatically followed rugby for many years.”

“I first went to South Africa in 1998 for a holiday and to visit family who live near Capetown. I fell in love with the country so much that I returned and lived in South Africa for three years.  I worked at orphanages and on conservation projects”.

“A year ago I returned to South Africa with 52 IRFU members and rugby supporters to watch Lions play against Springboks. The film brought back wonderful memories of being at such a big match and outstanding atmosphere as the South Africans have a grand passion for rugby.”

“It was amazing to watch invictus and finally understand the history of rugby in South Africia. It brought back proud and wonderful memories of my time in South Africia, especially visiting Nelson Mandela’s home and prison cell.  I would like to thank Bank of Ireland for a well-organised event and the fabulous prize. I am so excited”
